Traceability is one of those words that appears on every calibration report and gets read past just as quickly. But it's the entire reason a calibration means anything at all — so here's what that chain actually looks like, link by link.
The top of the chain: the SI units
Every measurement in the world ultimately refers back to the International System of Units — the SI — maintained through international agreement and coordinated by the International Bureau of Weights and Measures (BIPM) in Paris. Since 2019, every SI unit has been defined by fixed constants of nature rather than physical objects, which means the kilogram is no longer a metal cylinder in a vault — it's defined by Planck's constant, and can in principle be realised anywhere with sufficient skill and equipment.
The national link: NMI
In Australia, "sufficient skill and equipment" lives at the National Measurement Institute (NMI), which maintains our national measurement standards and realises the SI units locally. NMI's standards are compared internationally so that a newton in Brisbane agrees with a newton in Berlin. Under Australia's National Measurement Act, this is the legal foundation of measurement in the country.
The commercial link: accredited laboratories
Calibration laboratories like ours hold reference standards — reference masses, force transducers, reference thermometers, pressure standards — that are calibrated against NMI's standards, either directly or through other accredited laboratories. NATA accreditation to ISO/IEC 17025 provides independent verification that a laboratory maintains this chain properly: that its references are in calibration, its methods are valid, and its stated uncertainties are honest.
The final link: your instrument
When we calibrate your balance or compression machine against our references, your instrument becomes the newest link in that chain. The calibration report documents the connection — which references were used, their own calibration status, and the uncertainty accumulated along the way. That's why every link must be documented: a chain with an undocumented link isn't traceable, however good the equipment.
Why uncertainty grows down the chain
Each comparison adds a little uncertainty, which is why national standards are extraordinarily precise and working instruments less so. A useful mental model: traceability tells you your measurement is connected to the true unit; uncertainty tells you how tightly. Both appear on a proper calibration report, and both matter to anyone auditing your results.
